RMHF is one of the largest non-profits in Southeast Louisiana. Through an annual fundraising gala and community partnerships, the Foundation provides hospice care for terminally ill patients who do not have the means to pay for it. The Foundation operates through donations alone.
The mission of the foundation is to ensure that everyone who has a desire for hospice care will receive the care they deserve during their final days. Since opening in 2006 the Richard Murphy Hospice House has served over 660 terminally ill patients and their families at no cost.
RMHF was started after local businessman Richard Murphy was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 1982. The area did not have a local hospice house, but he wanted to spend his days with loved ones in a familiar home. As a result, Richard’s family, friends, and medical team banded together to form the area’s first hospice care center. That same sense of love and community lives on in the RMHF, its team, and its board members. The Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation Board of Directors is composed of community and business leaders who have been touched by hospice care for their family members or friends.
