Battling Burnout: Steps for Healthy Growth
The Secrets to a Healthier Workplace
Every textbook will tell you that team productivity is key to the growth of any business. But what they won’t tell you? Without keeping workplace health in check, rapid growth can be destructive.
Much in the same way overwatering your plants can make them sick, getting too big for your boots too quickly will actually lead to lower worker productivity, decreased team morale, and high turnover rates. This is especially true for the creative industry, where every day means coming up with new and innovative ideas.
An expectation for keeping creativity “on” at all times will place your team on a fast-track to burnout.
As Anntoine Marketing + Design continues to grow as an agency, we’ve realized that our best and most creative thinking originates from a place of total health. When we feel nurtured and supported in all aspects of our lives — socially, emotionally, physically, and financially — we feel empowered, come up with better solutions, and can tackle each day in stride.
Here’s how we do it:
Want to avoid a toxic workplace? Create a culture of open communication. Employees should feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas with each other and with management.
At Anntoine, our weekly Fixer Mixer meeting serves as an intentional space for problem solving, troubleshooting, and talking through hitches along the way. Those who do not feel comfortable speaking up are encouraged to participate in a weekly survey that offers an additional opportunity to express concerns.
Our monthly Teambuilder activities also contribute to nurturing healthy work relationships, providing team members with a chance to get to know each other outside of the office.
Sedentary work is hard on the body and mind. Research continues to show a direct link between physical activity and increased happiness. At Anntoine, employees passionate about fitness are encouraged to opt in to a gym membership.
All employees are provided with full health insurance plans, including vision and dental.
At Anntoine, we navigate emotional health by always keeping our guiding principles — Honesty, Integrity, Kindness, and Excellence — close to heart. We make an effort to regularly acknowledge and appreciate each other for our hard work, ensuring no one’s contributions go unnoticed.
We also encourage a healthy work-life balance by setting flexible hours. Our employees select work schedules that suit their unique lifestyles: Early birds can work 7-4, those who sleep in can work 9-6, and anyone in between can find the hours that work best for them.
The stress of financial uncertainty can be oppressive in turbulent times. To care for our employees’ financial wellness, Anntoine Marketing + Design has recently initiated a weekly Lunch & Learn program. Those who attend these sessions are invited to share a meal with coworkers while learning about budgeting, investing, and cultivating financial health.
Lastly, when fostering a healthy workplace, remember to always keep an open mind. Maintain a positive work environment by enthusiastically embracing new ideas.
